Steingarten-ing

Located off of Pico Boulevard, this gastropub is quaint and charming. Service at the Steingarten is a bit slow, slightly uncoordinated and the bartender also acted as our waiter, but the fare was luring. First up is the Chef's Choice burger -- consisting of bacon, smoked mozzarella and Steingarten mustard sauce -- and parmesan fries, $14. The meat was juicy, the cheese enveloping, the bacon crunchy and bread toasty. Next is the Hungarian (pork) sausage on top of a pretzel bun, topped with caramelized onions and apple and bacon sauerkraut, $7. Here, the sausage is moist, the onions soft and sauerkraut not so inherently sour (that's a good thing in my book!). The pretzel bun, though nicely crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, is a lot to chew on. You may find your jaws feeling a little overworked after a moment. But, the simple fix is to just cast some of the pretzel aside and take the sausage and toppings head on.
